A Trip Down Memory Lane
CAL has turned four years old. When I think about it, it’s absolutely insane; who would have believed we’d get this far? So, instead of lamenting the current situation of CAL and CS:GO in Asia, let’s go back in time and take a trip down memory lane.
When Nikhil, Gad, and I started CAL in October of 2018, we had a large number of players of all skill levels show up. They all united under the CAL umbrella, from established Asian professional players to joyful beginners. CAL, like most good things, introduced a sense of excitement to the scene while also providing something of value that the community was missing. We had leaderboards and prizes. Activity. Camaraderie.
When we started CAL, I was working for a Chinese CS:GO team in Beijing. I recall meeting Nikhil for the first time in Shanghai for a CS:GO tournament, just after CAL opened its doors. I recall staring at our laptops with excitement; new players flooded in, people were subscribing, queues were filling up and there was excitement in the air. We looked at each other like we had made it. And to a certain degree, we had. A healthy amount of subscribers meant that our little hobby project actually had some money to fund fun things for the community, such as Grassroots tournaments. Later on, during times with less activity, we had the absolute pleasure of working with sponsors who have added value to CAL through their contributions.
I think it’s fair to say that CAL’s best days might be behind us, but thinking back I’m proud that we did (and are still doing) something for the Asian CS:GO community.
But VALVE, if you feel like dropping a new version of Counter-Strike, or Source 2, I think that would be the best help we could get to revive CS in Asia. Cheers!
