After 10 days of intense competition, Singaporean mix squad ‘IDKASKUR’ takes home first place and USD $650 at the Lenovo Rise of Legion event.
The 260-team Lenovo: ‘Rise of Legion’ started on 4th May, and featured a straight best-of-one single elimination bracket culminating in the best-of-three (BO3) grand finals. Traditionally considered a low-tier event expecting to fetch 64 teams, to everyone’s surprise, over 260 teams signed up.
Perhaps due to the ongoing pandemic, and with little else to play for in the region, notable teams like Paper Rex, Beyond Esports, and D13 also made an appearance. The Mongolian side of D13 was fresh off a deep run at the ESL One: Road to Rio – Asia, and looked strong going into the event.
With this many teams, the schedule was moved from the original date of 4th-8th May to 4th-13th May. The best-of-one format is notorious for its upset potential, and the Rise of Legion was not spared. Thailand’s Beyond Esports was the first of the prominent teams to depart early, forfeiting their game due to schedule conflicts. Another surprise came in the round of sixteen when Indonesia’s Syntax eliminated D13, 16-12.
Playoffs
The quarter-finals featured more storylines, seeing the departure of Paper Rex by the eventual winners, IDKASKUR, after losing 17-19 on Dust2. Malaysian team, MIG-, was knocked out by AZ Gaming, and three of the four quarter-final matches featured overtimes.
In the third and fourth place match, Malaysia’s Darkhorse dominated AZ Gaming 16-1, a rather flat showing from the Mongolians after their impressive run.
Eventually, the Grand Finals came down to two mixed squads from Thailand and Singapore. Featuring ex-LaZe players Tidus ‘StyroN’ Goh and Marcus “nepph” Tan, IDKASKUR showed little trouble defeating the Thais, and took the series 2-0 (16-5, 16-9).
